CHAPTER 18

“Do you know anything about this sunken island then?” Harley asked Hudson the next morning over breakfast. His cast from the night before was already gone, his broken arm healed.

“You know what now that you mention it I remember one of the guys talking about a sunken island,” he recalled vaguely. “I’ll check up with them today and see what they can tell me.” Hudson’s eyes went wide as he remembered something else. “Oh, Zora! A letter came for you while you were out last night. I left it on the kitchen windowsill.”

I had a feeling this was the promised letter from Liza, specifying the details of our clandestine meeting. I got up from the table and found a small mint-green envelope with my name written upon it in swirling silver ink. Yeah, this was Liza alright.

I opened up the letter and read the note quickly, remembering how Liza said the note would set itself on fire after reading.

Zora,

Ask Hermes to bring you to my place, tonight at 8pm. He will ask you for a pass phrase. It’s Strawberry Tourniquet. We can talk then and there. Now drop this letter quickly.

Liza.

The corners of the letter went up in flame and I dropped it with a shriek, the paper burning away into nothing on the kitchen floor. Harley was staring at me in confusion, but Hudson was the first to speak.

“Don’t worry about the burning mail, you’ll get used to it,” he said to her. “Anything good, Zora?”

“Quite possibly,” I said, scanning the room to try and find sign of Hermes. Liza had asked to keep this meeting secret for now, so I couldn’t exactly spill the tea right now. Hermes knows. He’s known all this time?! “Where’s Hermes?” I asked, trying to remain calm.

“He’s sleeping in my room,” Harley said.

“Do you mind if I go and wake him?” I said through a strained smile.

“Uh sure, it’s a bit of a mess in there though. I’ll clean up today, I promise.”

I hurried across the kitchen and went into Harley’s room, which was probably cleaner than I had ever seen it. The only sign that Harley had moved in was evident by the canvas and easel in the corner, upon which was a rather impressive painting of a dragon flying over a lake.

“Holy crepes, Harley did this?” I muttered to myself. I shook the distraction out of my head and spotted Hermes sleeping on the bed. I marched up to him and flicked his ears to wake him.

“Not the monkeys!” he said, jumping with a start. A moment of confusion passed and then he yawned upon seeing me. “Oh, hey Zora. What’s up?”

“I’ll tell you what’s up. You’ve been lying to me. All this time.”

Panic came over Hermes, and he jumped up onto all four paws. “If this is about Alonso Rhubarb then I can explain!”

I was always impressed by how quickly Hermes could confuse someone, this moment being no exception. I opened my mouth as I tried to contemplate what he had just said.
